What’s It Like in a Day in the Life of a Dental Assistant?

If you’ve been to the dentist recently, you probably interacted with a dental assistant. They may have checked you in, taken X-rays, helped the dentist during your exam, and scheduled your next appointment. These healthcare professionals move between patient care, clinical tasks, and office responsibilities, so a day in the life of a dental assistant can look very different from one shift to the next.

If you’re curious about this healthcare career, keep reading to learn what a typical workday can involve.

What Does a Dental Assistant Do?

Dental assistants have a mix of clinical and office duties. They’re often in the exam room helping dentists with procedures, but they may also spend time on administrative tasks, like scheduling appointments and answering messages.

Some common responsibilities of a dental assistant can include:

A dental assistant may handle some or even all of these tasks in the same shift. However, their exact responsibilities can depend on a few factors, including the practice where they work and state requirements. For example, some states allow dental assistants to help with additional tasks, like coronal polishing.

What a Day in the Life of a Dental Assistant Looks Like

It’s hard — if not impossible — to describe a typical day in the life of a dental assistant, because no 2 days look the same. Patient needs and priorities can change from day to day, so flexibility is an essential skill for dental assistants.

For many dental assistants, including American Career College–Los Angeles alumna Berenice Q., the day-to-day variety can make the work feel exciting. “I love what we have to do every day, going through emergencies sometimes,” Berenice says. “You don't know what's gonna come through the door at the end of the day so it's always fun, you never know.”

Here’s what a dental assistant’s day in the life may look like from the beginning to the end of a shift.

Beginning of Day

A dental assistant’s shift may begin before the first patient even arrives. Before the office opens, they may already be hard at work, reviewing the schedule and preparing for the day ahead.

In some offices, a dental assistant’s day begins with a team huddle or meeting. During this time, the whole team might discuss the exams and procedures planned for the day, so everyone knows what to expect. Some dental assistants stay organized by taking notes or using planners.

Once the first patients show up, dental assistants may bring them back to exam rooms and help them get settled for an appointment or procedure. A dental assistant may review a patient’s medical history or answer a patient’s questions about treatment. This interaction can help a patient feel more comfortable before meeting with a hygienist or dentist.

Spending time with patients is a big part of the job, and some dental assistants, like ACC–Orange County alumna Vanessa N., enjoy those daily interactions.  “I like building that trust with patients with what we do before the doctor sees them," Vanessa says.

Mid-Shift

During the day, dental assistants are on the go. They may spend a good chunk of their shift chairside helping dentists with treatments or procedures. They need to be alert and ready to hand tools to the dentist, use suction equipment, and assist with other tasks. After a procedure or appointment, a dental assistant may explain follow-up care or answer any additional questions the patient may have.

While dental assistants work on a schedule, it can change throughout the day. Patients may arrive late or cancel, or appointments may take longer than planned. Dental assistants need to stay flexible and be prepared to adjust to keep the office running smoothly.

Many dental assistants, like ACC–Ontario alumna Victoria G., find patient care to be one of the most rewarding parts of the job. “That’s honestly my favorite part about dental assisting,” she says.

Between appointments, dental assistants have plenty of other work to do. They may disinfect exam rooms, sterilize instruments, replace supplies, and make sure everything is ready for the next patient. They may also help with office work, such as handling paperwork and updating patient records.

End of Day

As the day winds down, a dental assistant can start wrapping up. After the last patient leaves, they may clean exam rooms, restock supplies, and take out the trash. They may also contact patients to confirm upcoming appointments, complete invoices and insurance paperwork, and finish updating patient records.

Once they check off their final to-dos, a dental assistant can clock out for the day and recharge before it’s time for their next shift.

Is Becoming a Dental Assistant Right for You?

Dental assisting may be a good career choice if you’re a people person who enjoys being around others. It’s a job that involves a lot of patient interaction, as well as collaboration with hygienists, dentists, and other office staff.

As a dental assistant, you may spend some time at a desk completing paperwork or answering phones, but you’ll also have many hands-on tasks. A typical shift for a dental assistant offers plenty of variety, so if you’re someone who gets bored doing the same tasks all day long, it might be a good fit for you.

Another potential benefit of dental assisting is the work schedule. Because most dental assistants work in dental offices, their hours often align with the practice’s operating hours. Depending on the employer, full-time and part-time opportunities may be available, although some positions may require evening or weekend shifts

A career as a dental assistant can also be rewarding if you have a desire to help people. Making someone smile a little brighter can bring joy and fulfillment to many dental assistants, like ACC–Los Angeles alumnus Daniel D.

“I'm really determined to make a difference in this world and that's starting with making patients smile,” Daniel says.
